On Auto Pil(a)t(e)
Pilate is easily one of the most underrated bands in Canada right now. Their sound is anything but earth shattering, so they are often overlooked by both critics and fans – completely understandable when you consider the talent coming out of this country right now.
When listening to their music, it’s easy to understand why the band draws so many comparisons to Coldplay and U2. Their debut album Caught by the Window was certainly a testament to this, and 2006’s Self Control for Life’s Speed does little to sway any opinions. That being said, it is a solid effort from a band that, when at its best, can produce some great music. The lead single, Barely Listening, fails to compare to previous hits such as Into Your Hideout and Overrated – but thankfully some of the album’s more dramatic songs hold their own. Knife-Grey Sea is an epic track that displays the vocal power of lead singer and transplanted Kiwi Todd Clark. The album has many other momets, including Turn the Lights On and Ambulance.
