A Bass Guitar and a Drum

Kingston, Ontario isn’t really known as a hot-bed for musical talent. Granted the city is the birthplace of ‘reckless’-rocker Bryan Adams, and the hometown of Canadian favourites The Tragically Hip. There has been little music from the area, however, that has made an impact on the country’s alternative scene. During the mid 90s, The Inbreds carried the indie-torch for the city. Their music was for the most part simplistic in instrumentation. Band members Mike O’Neil and Dave Ullrich only produced one record that went beyond their clear-cut drum and bass guitar configuration (1996’s It’s Sydney or the Bush). 1994’s Kombinator is perhaps the best example of how the two were capable of creating catchy, melodic songs without moving beyond the realm of their two percussion instruments. The albums singles, “You Will Know” and “Any Sense of Time” were massive indie hits across all of Canada. It is definitely a classic Canadian independent album.
